Toy Story 3

Lets face the facts! Most three part (or more) movie series end up finishing on shaky ground. The latest Shrek movie has failed to inspire what the first two movies had, the last Aliens movie was nowhere near as good as the early ones, The Matrix had its two sequels scrapped in production because everyone knew they would be so crap and the less said about the Predator movies the better. So in light of this, with 10 years since the last movie, what can we honestly expect from Toy Story 3? Is this movie really that good?

Better than sex, seriously!

Better than sex, seriously!

Yes, emphatically 100% undiluted aged 70 years cast iron rock solid best movie this year greatest end to a series OMG im actually crying I haven't done that for ages YES. There is nothing about this movie that I felt could have been done any better. Each scene is flawless, well thought out and brilliantly scripted. The pace of the entire movie, from the slow scenes to the action scenes, is executed perfectly. The jokes are everywhere and I can say that my face hurt from grinning like a loon for the whole movie. Anyway, if you've been living under a rock and don't know what Toy Story is all about then look away now before I go all spoiler on your ass.

The first Toy Story movie was released in 1995 (I was 8 years old) and was the first movie that Disney and Pixar produced together. It was also the first movie to be made entirely using CGI. To say it blew my mind is an understatement, and I was a huge fan from the beginning. The second instalment, imaginatively titled Toy Story 2, was just as good. The fact that I loved the second movie just as much is a good indication of its quality, I was 12 by that time and more interested in girls than toys. Now, the third movie has arrived, and I am 23. The fact that I was still blown away by the movie is really amazing, this is a movie that has something for everyone, from a child, to a teenager, to an adult. Hell, there were more adults in the movie theatre than children when I went to see it. Oh and I went to see it in 2D because lets face it, that is how Toy Story should be seen (I have heard it is just as epic in 3D though).

What is this 3D nonsense.

What is this 3D nonsense.

So now for a brief synopsis of the plot. Andy, the owner of the toys, is about to head off to college. The toys are understandably worried about what will become of them now that they don't get played with any more.  Through a series of events the toys go from being destined to live in the attic to arriving at the Sunnyside Daycare centre. While at first this seems to be a paradise for toys, it is soon revealed that the children are anything but gentle with the toys. The toys then have to escape this centre and try to return to Andy before he leaves for college.

If this plot seems fairly similar to the previous two (need to get back to Andy, a villain in the way, tension amongst the group), then don't worry, because it is. The formula used is not really different, but the execution is what makes it amazing. The theme is all about growing up, stubbornly holding on to your childhood/past, things changing beyond your control and the toys is just wanting to be played with one last time. The culmination of the movie does see Andy leaving the toys behind, but it is done so perfectly I was in tears. It should be mandatory for every producer thinking of making a sequel to watch this because the ending is flawless.

I was wondering all the way up to watching this movie, how will they round out such a great series. How will they close the story without leaving some sort of disappointment. What will become of Woody and Buzz and the others after the end of the movie (because you really do worry about where these characters will go after the series ends, or at least I did). Toy Story 3 leaves no questions unanswered and a warm fuzzy feeling on the inside. I'm pretty sure if they got Kim Jong-il to watch the Toy Story series then the border would be open by the end of the week. This is now officially one of the best trilogy's ever, and part of my childhood has been left complete with no regrets, how often can you say that? I give it 6 out of 5, because it even has zombies.

All this raving may or may not have convinced you to watch the movie, but don't take my word for it, go see it for yourself.

To infinity and beyond!

  1. There was /one/ moment where my willing suspense of disbelief was broken, that being the dumpster scene. Elsewise, a brilliant movie that I recommend completely.

Sidenote: You thought Shrek 2 was good?

  2. Well, I thought it wasn’t as bad as the ones that came after it….

  3. Which dumpster scene? There are several garbage scenes.

Bonus: Andy’s drummer garbageman was Sid. What a cameo!

  4. true, there were a few dumpster scenes. in fact, trash was a running theme of sorts. Also that is an awesome cameo.
