Toy Story 3

Lets face the facts! Most three part (or more) movie series end up finishing on shaky ground. The latest Shrek movie has failed to inspire what the first two movies had, the last Aliens movie was nowhere near as good as the early ones, The Matrix had its two sequels scrapped in production because everyone knew they would be so crap and the less said about the Predator movies the better. So in light of this, with 10 years since the last movie, what can we honestly expect from Toy Story 3? Is this movie really that good?

The Brain and other interesting things #1

The human brain (indeed, any brain) is a remarkable thing. Compact, fairly lightweight (about 1.5kg) and slightly larger on average for men (although observation seems to indicate otherwise), it controls everything you do.

BBC News – US and Russia announce deal to cut nuclear weapons

BBC News - US and Russia announce deal to cut nuclear weapons.

Well well, finally some good news. I don't know about everyone else, but Nuclear weapons are not my idea of cool, and anything that reduces the stockpile is a good thing. I seriously felt i should post this here, because after visiting Hiroshima a month ago, I don't even want to imagine those things existing. Get rid of them all, launch them at the sun or something. Convert them all into Hyperion nucler batteries powering VASIMIR plasma rockets in space. Just, please, get rid of them.

Peace

Australia bans small breasts

Australia bans small breasts - Somebody Think Of The Children.

Ok, Maybe it is just because I am tired and cannot sleep, but seriously. My country seems to be going down the toilet in a rather dramatic fashion lately.

First (OK, not first, but recently) it is the video games, Left 4 Dead 2 was pussified to the max to allow it to be sold down under. Let me tell you, it is pretty weak, i think goldeneye on the 64 was more violent. You want to know the interesting thing, in the same shop that I bought L4D2 I can get L4D which includes all the gore, decapitation and body piles (albeit smaller) of an abotoir running out of control.

COME ON AUSTRALIA, WTF

Second, the gov is trying to put in an internet censorship plan which bans certain sites on the web. Now, do the public get to see this? HELLS TO THE NO WE DON'T, the government has this list of things they don;t want us seeing hidden nicely away. Today it is nasty porn sites, tomorrow it is people advocating anything the government gets butthurt about, and next thing you know, welcome to North KoreAustralia, with supreme dictator Kim Jong-Rudd in charge. Do they even realise people who traffic illegal porn don't just Google the bloody stuff, they use sneaky means of moving it. The same way that drug dealers don't set up their bloody labs at the local police station!

come ON Australia, WTFH

And now, the censorship board is banning girls with small breasts that look like they might be under 18. What. The. F*CK. If you are a 25 yr old with small breasts who looks young, you are not allowed to have pictures of yourself in the public domain. So what if there is a guy who looks really femenine but is over 18, if he snaps his top half it is ok? Maybe next they will be handing out bhurkas and rounding all us atheists up and shoving us into camps.

The people who push for this stuff are Family First, essentially a front for the Catholic church. I bet that suprised you. They also deny climate change, oppose abortion and all the rest, but are definitely not a religious group trying to impose onto politics. Well, I guess most of the people who read this will be American so you know all about the religion/politics thing. Oh BTW I heard your president speaking today, at least he sounds like you could hold a conversation with him without facepalming fifty times.

SO, in summation, I am starting to get a little bit upset about older people like THIS WANKER, Michael Atkinson. Watch the vid, see the stupid in action. He is protecting the children, OH NOES, they might get hold of an R18 game. Well, only if their parents buy it for them you twit. Haha, did you also see the bit where he talked about the 'violent Americans' and the GTA Krishna killing. Ok, so i'm starting to rant and rave a bit now, I'll leave you all be. Maybe I will show the link between a lack of violent video games and torching the AG's house!!

Just kidding, I'm able to differentiate between games and real life.

Space Lasers for SCIENCE!!!

BBC News - EADS Astrium develops space power concept.

Seriously, you ever play Sim City 2000, remember the microwave dish power plant? Does an orbital laser beaming infrared energy onto a receiver 24 hours a day excite you in ways your spouse may not be comfortable with? This link is for you then.

If they could have orbiting solar panels beaming down the energy in the next ten years, I will die a happy man. Energy is a giant hurdle humanity faces. If you could remove our reliance on fossil fuels, you can probably solve the global warming problem (PLANT SOME TREES TOO! ). If removing that dependency is done using an ORBITING SPACE LASER, then i think we can all agree the world will be a more kick ass place than it already is.

I mean, come on. Can you imagine giving the R & D proposal speech for this baby.

So I Saw Avatar

In 3D, It looked glorious, although as has been mentioned the plot was about as thin as an anorexic who has been run over by a steam roller. Still, I give thanks to the dedicated computer wizards who managed to do such a splendid job.

Two grumbles. Firstly, with movie 3D, there is one focal point, and everything else is relative to this (Either forground or background). If you focus on something other than the designated focal point, it can mess with your head. However, this is inescapable at the moment.

Second. Unobtanium. Seriously. WTF.

I dunno, maybe I am being uncharitable, but i imagine this movie is only good for a couple viewings until the copious amounts of cheese kill you. Unlike Zombieland, which is an awesome movie.

I give Avatar a 7 out of 10. 8 for being gobsmackingly beautiful to look at, and -1 for not having zombies.

The Lovely Bones

So, today i saw the movie, The Lovely Bones. I saw it in place of Sherlock Holmes, which is a choice i sort of wish i didn't make but the girl i was watching it with wanted to go shopping first so we saw TLB which was on later, and as my father said once, "always side with the p..." *ahem* I digress.

So, for those of you who don't know, TLB is an adaption of a book by Alice Sebold that was written in 2002. While I haven't read the book, wikipedia's synopsis is detailed enough the indicate that a reasonable amount of fudging has been done to the story to get it to the big screen. This ultimately lead to the feeling i got from the movie, which is that it should have been either half an hour shorter or half an hour longer. Many of the scenes felt either not fully explored and added in a shotgun fashion, or else they were padded with much intense staring and people looking like shifty hoodlums from Hindley Street in Adelaide.

The most redeeming factor of the movie was easily the special effects. The CG scenes were beautiful, and on the big screen even made me forget I was sitting next to a hot lady friend. If that doesn't say 'this CG is awesome', then I don't know what does.

So, I give TLB a score of 5.5 out of 10.

7 for the movie, -1 for not having zombies, and -0.5 because the popcorn i bought was totally the stuff from the bottom of the machine and was filled with burnt bits and crunchy stuff :(

Oh yeah, the guy who plays the bad dude does a real good job of acting like a freaky psycho pants guy, so props for that.

Peace out, Berga
