The Brain and other interesting things #1

The human brain (indeed, any brain) is a remarkable thing. Compact, fairly lightweight (about 1.5kg) and slightly larger on average for men (although observation seems to indicate otherwise), it controls everything you do.

Mars’ Big Ocean

At this point, there's very little doubt that in the past liquid water existed on Mars.

However,  in the article entitled: "Ancient Ocean on Mars Supported by global distribution of deltas and Valleys of Nature Geoscience" two University of Colorado scientists, based on elevation data taken by various probes and study of deposits in 52 deltas and thousands dry river valleys, claim that up to one third of the planet's surface was covered in water 3,500 million years ago.

Pictured: What Mars might have looked like 3.5 billion years ago with a large ocean of water... and a Mars version of Australia on the far right.

According to their estimates, this vast ocean would have contained 124 million cubic kilometers of water, which come to be as much as one-tenth of the current oceans of the Earth, although it must be thrown to the table that Mars is about half the size of Earth.

The big question that remains, is: "What the hell happened on Mars that was big enough to make the planet lose all that water? That may be a good question to answer in future missions to our neighbor but [presumed] desolated planet.

An interesting discussion

http://www.physorg.com/news190872056.html

Over on physorg there's an interesting article, and even more interesting discussion going on about punishment vs. reward. I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to read a bit, especially since at least one SEDhead around here as expressed an interest in Game Theory, and this (The Nash equilibrium, and Prisoner dilemma to some extent) is core game theory.

In honor of 4/20

Today is 4/20, and that means that marijuana users are crawling out of the woodwork. A large portion of them seem to be spouting off the same old tired, ignorant crap. So, I have this to say, this year on 4/20:

No, it's not healthier than tobacco or alcohol. You're still burning something and inhaling. Pound for pound, it's just as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. Second, natural tobacco isn't as addictive as corporate tobacco. When you finally get marijuana legalized, what, you think it's going to stay all natural and not be ridiculously addictive? What, you think major corporations aren't going to try and make a profit out of it? Huh? Seriously. Is Phillip Morris just going to sit by while Ralph's Reefermobile makes $5 an ounce?

Ohhh righttt.... Marijuana is a symbol of like, freedom... and like... you know... like... peace... So... when the big companies start selling it... they're going to like... mellow out and feel the love... yeeeaaahhhh....... and it will, like... totally change the world!... They'll see how they're hurting people... and they'll like... totally stop and just vibe with us... And then wars will stop... and I'll win the lottery... Oh Dude... A unicorn just walked in through my window... Nah, I'm messing with you... It's just Jen... Hey Jen... Oh wait... I typed that instead of saying it... lolololol.......

Uh. No. Sorry.

And, as The Colorist is always pointing out: If science really believed all the bubkis and hype about marijuana, then the beneficial elements would be been identified, refined, and distributed in a more efficient delivery method.

Glauconex: Helps resolve cataracts and glaucoma.

Or maybe like, Nautegra: Combats nausea and stimulates appetite for cancer sufferers and anorexics.

Nope. Sorry. It's social. It's about personal identity. It's about who you want to be, not about what the drug does, and that's tainting every argument you make. It's no different than saying "I want a vehicle". Well, if you just want a vehicle, you can pick one up for cheap at a junk yard. "Well, I want it to be a good vehicle." Okay, so how about this truck then? "Naw... I like cars, not trucks." Okay how about this one? "No... I want it to be red."

You don't want just a vehicle. You want a good, red, car.
You don't want to just treat the disease. You want to feel good, and not care/remember how bad you feel.

So stop trying all this pseudoscience, completely bullshit crap, and just say you LIKE it. I might actually support legalization then.

Weekly Dump

Okay, so, just a bit of site news first: I finally got the keyboard navigation working on the site. Wasn't that hard, I just kept forgetting to do it. So, now you can navigate the comic with the left and right arrows on your keyboard, as well as shift clicking left or right to get to the first comic or the last comic, respectively.

Next up, there was this study done about slowing down the obesity epidemic in America. What was their solution? Subsidize starvation. I shit you not.

...Okay,... so what they were really saying is that by making junk food more expensive, less people will buy it, so therefore, it must be helping them to make healthy food choices!! Yay!! Well, no. The entire study was this giant, epic fail, a full hellameter across. First off, their sampling was women only. Yes, women only. So, even if their findings weren't bubkis, it would only apply to women. Sorry guys, but having a test group of only one distinction is FAIL. Second, there wasn't a control group. Third, everybody was given about 20.00 to feed each member of their family for a week. When junk food prices went up, the number of calories in their selections went down... but, would they have been able to feed the family for the week?

Basically, it comes down to this: Make the food more expensive, and yes, people will consume less. Duh. The problem isn't how much people are consuming, it's what, and honestly here's the shitty truth:
1. Until carrots start tasting like doritos, people are going to buy the doritos.
2. A large part of the incentive of junk food is that it's cheaper than "real food".
3. Making junk food more expensive just means people will have less ways to actually stretch their money.
4. That means you're encouraging poor people to starve, unless you find a way to make the healthy food as cheap as the junk food used to be. You can't remove the cheap options without basically giving 70% of the country the finger.
5. The other big part of junk food's hold on the country is time. It's convenient and quick.
6. I dunno about you, but I really don't have an extra 4-5 hours a day to dedicate to cleaning, preparing, and cooking food, and then cleaning dishes.
7. The time argument can be fixed though, as long as we can get a bill passed that says that all women must be housewives, like it was in the 30's before all the junk food.
8. Oh wait, that's right. That's WHY junk food was made. Go figure.

University at Buffalo, I am disappointed in you.

Okay, well, not really. Didn't really have many high expectations anyways...

And last, in this giant spew off the top of my head: Adelaide huh...? Hey Berga, by any chance, you figure you're related...?

Space Lasers for SCIENCE!!!

BBC News - EADS Astrium develops space power concept.

Seriously, you ever play Sim City 2000, remember the microwave dish power plant? Does an orbital laser beaming infrared energy onto a receiver 24 hours a day excite you in ways your spouse may not be comfortable with? This link is for you then.

If they could have orbiting solar panels beaming down the energy in the next ten years, I will die a happy man. Energy is a giant hurdle humanity faces. If you could remove our reliance on fossil fuels, you can probably solve the global warming problem (PLANT SOME TREES TOO! ). If removing that dependency is done using an ORBITING SPACE LASER, then i think we can all agree the world will be a more kick ass place than it already is.

I mean, come on. Can you imagine giving the R & D proposal speech for this baby.

(Excited) Berga, out.

Actually that’s not too surprising

So here ya go: In, America, there's this thing, called the Healthy People plan, that outlines goals for the country for "Healthiness" and whatnot. The current plan was just reviewed, and... well, it wasn't too pretty.

is-not-fat-is-just-fluffy

I tried to tell my doctor that, but she didn't believe me.

Did Americans get any healthier over past decade?. [link to PhysOrg.com]

Am I writing about this because of the raging obesity epidemic in America?

...no, of course not.

I'm writing this to say: "NO SHIT, SHERLOCK. AMERICA IS A GODDAMNED CAPITALIST COUNTRY AND FOOD IS A ECONOMIC LINCHPIN. THE GOVERNMENT HAS NO CONTROL OVER THIS CRAP."

Logically speaking, of course.

I mean, think about it. Capitalist country, run by it's economy, and the government tries to step in all lovey dovey, all outline a plan of "helpful" things to encourage people to live better.

News flash for that one, boyo: The Almighty Dollar runs capitalist nations, not the Almighty Bureaucrat. If letting people remain unhealthy is profitable, it will happen. If not giving a shit is profitable, it will happen. If crime is profitable, it will happen. If Death and Decay is profitable, it will happen.

Hopefully you have the glyph for it.

Until making people healthy becomes profitable, it won't happen. But to do so from a legislative standpoint would be to overstep the boundaries of government. Hell, just deciding that this is what you think is best for the American public, and then actually making laws to support your own agenda is overstepping the boundaries.

fat-car-1

Premium Fue, then staying the garage all the time? Bad mix, brah.

So what's the better plan? Well, weight is gained when calories consumed is greater than calories burned. Keep that in mind.

Right now, we live in a society where we are expected to work very long hours with little purpose. People put in 9 hour days, but they really only have enough work for maybe half that time. But if you were to do all of your work in that amount of time, and then say, go home (if the boss was cool) they would only pay you half the amount, since you only worked half the hours.

Translation: You're not getting paid for the work you accomplish, or the job you do. You're getting paid based on how many hours of your life are spent on location. In a sort of hopeful spin, I assume part of the reason you have to stick around even though your workload doesn't justify it, is because of expectation that something might happen, and the company doesn't want to be shorthanded. Okay.

Right right. Easy stuff.

Well, that's a number of hours off your day. Now toss in commute time and logistics. Pretty much everything in America requires a car to get to. So now we have car related things to add to the time sink... And I'm sure you can see where I'm going with that. Point is, from my experience, working a 9 hour daily job, usually ends up taking around 11-12 hours a day.

But... The thing is, even though I'm running around a lot, and I'm stressed, and so much of my life is just ticking down...

...And as you sit it traffic, it all catches up with you.

...And as you sit it traffic, it all catches up with you.

...I'm not actually doing that much. I'm sitting in traffic, or I'm walking around a store, or I'm sitting at a desk for god knows how many hours. Not enough calories are getting burned to justify my diet.

My diet that is based on the cornerstone of Capitalism. Cheaper foods are worse for you. They're highly processed, with crap tons of things that the average person can't pronounce. The have no real content, just filler, because the filler that makes the food is itself cheap: See also Corn Meal. And I, like most people, have other things I need to buy, so I cut corners here and there. And as long as I'm sitting on my ass for most of the day to get the paycheck that can only pay for the cheapest food, I'm going to be unhealthy, because IT'S ALL I CAN AFFORD.

In terms of money, and in terms of time.

You want to encourage people to get healthy, you need to change the system so that people actually have the ability to do so. If I can finish my workload for the week in two days, then let me do so, then pay me for a full week. That way I can spend time doing other more enjoyable things, or get another job so I can finally afford fruits and vegetables.

Otherwise, you're just making all of us feel like crap by telling us that we need to get healthy when we have no money or time or opportunity to actually do anything about it.

------------

[As a side note to this: When I was in high school, I lost 180 lbs in a year, by biking every day and eating a good diet. I was also homeschooled at the time. I'm completely capable of doing that sort of thing again, but I can't, and that's why I realize that it comes down to a time and money issue. I lost weight back then because I didn't have any time obligations, and my mom bought all my food. Now, I have to work, and I have to buy my food, and I understand why my mom is overweight.]

Why Feminists Suck

WHY FEMINISTS SUCK
An observation of self-detrimental action and societal structuring as it relates to gender equality.

ABSTRACT:
I personally have always wondered about the statement I hear from Feminists about women being equal to men.  Now, I do agree that women are equally valuable to society as men, if not more so, but I question the specifics of the argument. Things such as strength, intelligence, and independence often arise in such conversations, with Feminists claiming diligence equal to if not greater than their male counterparts.

It is important to note that I make a large distinction between a woman who appreciates and encourages female integration in society, and a Feminist. Feminists typically have no appreciation for males, and instead rely on the same narrow-minded tactics that were formerly used to oppress women, such as spreading misinformation about the potential of the opposite sex.

DEFINITIONS:

-         Feminist: We know these women. They speak of gender equality, but spend more time trying to knock men down a few pegs than trying to improve on themselves. The social group equivalent of trying to break someone else’s face so you’ll be prettier than they are by comparison.
-         Intelligence: I am not talking about how big your brain is. Or how capable you are at mental gymnastics. I am referring here to clinical intelligence. Mechanical problem solving capability as it relates to survival. Generally speaking, women are better at “mental juggling” than men are. Men are better at objective ‘this plus that equals that.’ That is most likely due to men being designed for hunting and other high risk roles. Or alternately, because society places the responsibility for those roles on the shoulders of men and therefore they have adapted to that situation, depending on how you look at it.

OUTLINE:
Getting mad at men for the difficulties women face is like playing chess and getting mad at the opposition’s chess pieces while you attempt to play the game with cards. Chess was designed to be played with chess pieces. Society was made by men, for men. Societal structure as a whole needs to be reassessed to deal with sexual equality.

Also, the argument of Feminists needs to be reassessed to promote valuable female attributes, rather than scoffing at feminine qualities and encouraging girls to become pseudo-males.

Logically, if a society needs people with certain attributes to ensure there’s always food available, then people with those attributes would be valued in that society. That value would lead to the best having more reproductive options.

That same society would raise its children to understand that those attributes are valuable things. Thus the society accepts those attributes are good, and emphasizes them according to priority based on environment.

When a society is controlled by men, it is male attributes which will be emphasized.

THE FOOTBALL PLAYERS AND HOCKEY PLAYERS:
Let’s image a group of people will similar attributes. We’ll call them Joes. Now, these Joes want a game to play, they would, logically, make a game that would support their attributes. If they are good at throwing balls, running, and tackling, they would make a game like football. Let’s imagine that to be the case.

Let’s imagine a second group called Janes. These Janes want to game too, but if they’re all naturally graceful and can jump really high, then they probably wouldn’t make a game like football, they would make something that fits their own skills more naturally.

In the case of men vs. women in society, that’s essentially what it is like. The structure of society was built by men, for men. The attributes valued are the attributes necessary for personal advancement based on the structure of that system. If strength and independence are integral to a man’s survival, then strength and independence will be valued in a system designed by men. There’s no sense in someone making a system which values something not inherently part of the design of the pieces of that system. In other words, if you were designing a card game, chess pieces wouldn’t be particularly valuable.

Women in America, until fairly recently, have not been a valued group. Suddenly women are thrust into a system which decided these traits are valuable, these traits are not, and women have had an awkward time adjusting to that. Suddenly women are allowed to vote or hold positions of power, but there’s a problem: The system wasn’t designed to handle women, so those women encounter problems “making it up the ladder,” such as the proverbial “glass ceiling.”

But it stands to reason that women don’t have the same skills as men, so therefore can’t reach as high in a male oriented system.

…ENTER THE FEMINIST:
When Feminists go on about women being just as strong, intelligent, and independent as men, it’s like saying that a figure skater is just as good at football player at throwing a ball, tackling people, and running. A figure skater may be capable of learning to play football given enough time, but why should that be important? Why can’t a figure skater be good at figure skating instead?

And if strength, intelligence, and independence are male traits, then what are Feminists saying? Female can have just as many male traits as men do? Isn’t that even vaguely insulting? Doesn’t it seem counter-productive to the idea of elevating women?

The fault lies with the design of the system. The current methods of government, economy, and society are decidedly male in design, thus the design favors men. It is a system which worked incredibly well in the past, when plagues, war, famine, and death were omnipresent. A male controlled society then was protected and safe, even if it was oppressive and hostile. But now, that design is flawed. We aren’t fighting wolves in the forest or battling the elements, or otherwise operating under incredibly dire and deadly situations. Our society is huge, and is safe due to its size. Rather than claiming that it is men who oppress women, it would be more reasonable to understand that it is the system itself which oppresses women, and therefore it is the system which needs changing. The system should be torn out, examined, and a new system should be created which emphasizes the attributes and skills of both sexes.

THE ORIGIN:
Men deal almost exclusively in hierarchal systems. It would seem reasonable that in prehistoric times, males would identify problems in social groups and attempt to remedy those problems with structure, even subconsciously. As the size of social groups grew, more structure becomes necessary, especially in opposition to dangers in the environment.

Also, it should be mentioned that most likely the hierarchal system was most likely designed to counter male independence. Such as, if you get a group of men together, they’re not really empathetic with each others needs, so therefore they all wander off in different directions. Hierarchy, based on who is the strongest and therefore more likely to be dangerous, would end being necessary, in the idea of: Okay, I need to eat, but I can’t kill a mammoth on my own, so, all you guys have to help me, or else I’ll beat you into a pulp with a heavy object.

OBVIOUSLY:
The attentive will understand I’m not saying women cannot be strong, intelligent, or independent. To say such a thing would be comparable to saying that a painting must exist as absolutely one color. What I am saying is that to outright demand that these qualities be fulfilled specifically in opposition to men, is absolutely ridiculous. It’s like saying a photographer should stop taking photos and learn to paint. In the scheme of female empowerment and encouragement of gender equality, it’s incredibly self-detrimental. Rather than be yourself, or improve all aspects of yourself, you should be perpetually combative, and try so damned hard to prove that the other groups of humans are weak and pathetic.

NOTES:
Figure skating is not something to scoff at. It takes an incredible amount of endurance and finesse, as well planning. When done well, it can be absolutely beautiful. My mother loves figure skating, and so that’s why I use it as an example. Not because it’s girly or anything.

The title was just to be obnoxious.

This article was never finished. It was just cleaned up and dusted off. I don't even agree with myself on a few points here. I think I wrote this when I was in college or something.
